A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions.
Globally, the average carbon footprint for a person is closer to 4 tons. To have the best chance of avoiding a 2℃ rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop to under 2 tons by 2050.
Lowering individual carbon footprints by 50% doesn’t happen overnight! By making small changes to our actions, like eating less meat, taking fewer connecting flights and line drying our clothes, we can start making a big difference. Beside these small changes in our habits, we can offset part of our carbon footprint that cannot be eliminated or reduced. And the easiest way to do so is through carbon credits!

A carbon credit is a tradable permit or certificate that allows offsetting one ton of carbon dioxide or an equivalent of another greenhouse gas emitted by the user. This is essentially an offset for producers of such gases.
The creation of carbon credits is the reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from industrial activities to reduce the effects of global warming. Using carbon credits where abatement costs are high leads to cost-effective mitigation.

The purpose of the project activities is the setup of 27 independent biogas plants (digesters) for serving individual households comprising of an average of 4 members each using cattle dung collected from buffaloes, cows and calves currently being housed at such households in several districts of Gujarat, India.
Each household is directly connected to the biogas digesters and feeds cattle dung into the anaerobic digesters. The technology is tried and tested in India, and has been in use for many years. By utilizing cattle dung in a controlled anaerobic digestion and combustion system, biogas will be available for cooking energy and heat water for bath.
What is a non-fungible token (NFT)?
NFTs are tokens that we can use to represent ownership of unique items. They let us tokenize things like art, collectibles or real estate! They can only have one official owner at a time and they're secured by the Ethereum blockchain – no one can modify the record of ownership.
In our case, we use NFTs as a digital representation and ownership of carbon credits. Buying, trading, and selling your carbon credits as NFTs helps the illiquid carbon credit trading market become more liquid, enabling companies, organizations, and individuals the ability to access credits efficiently.

When should I retire my carbon credits?
After you buy a Carbon Credit NFT, you will have two options:
(1) you can trade the NFT to another user, or (2) you can retire the carbon credit.
Retiring a carbon credit means that when it is purchased it is taken off the market forever—never to be traded again. This way, only the purchaser of the carbon credit can ever claim to have reduced emissions. They cannot, for example, claim they have reduced emissions and then resell the credit. This is to avoid double counting or greenwashing!
So you can make your choice! Will you trade your carbon credits? Or retire it?
